One more from our scrapped MOBA project. We spent a lot of time thinking about the game's UI and about the way characters would be presented at the point of character selection and/or purchase. This was a prototype for how a character screen might have looked (minus the buttons of course). Characters would be large and zoomed-in to maximize visual impact; each of their homeworlds would be alluded to in the background image, which would always be rendered in a monochromatic intaglio style (took forever to figure out the perfect combination of layers to achieve this effect); and text from each character's story would be lightly ghosted in behind them.
By the time the game was cancelled, we had a pretty good idea of how the UI was going to work in-game and were zeroing in on how it would function in our character shop. Learned a lot during the process though, so definitely not a total loss.
Each character illustration I did was going to have two uses: full-body marketing image and a cropped UI version. You can see the full figure version below:
